Enter Romeo

Romeo. Providing I can trust my dreams, some great news are coming soon! Love is what rules my heart and all day long I've had cheerful thoughts. I dreamt that my lady came and found me dead. I mean, it's such a strange dream, it would make a dead man think. In my dream, she brought me back to life when she kissed my lips. I rose from the dead and became an emperor. Oh my! how awesome it would be to actually have the woman I love - if just thinking about her makes me so happy.

Enter Romeo's servant, Balthasar

Do you have news from Verona? What's it, Balthasar? Have you brought me letters from the friar? How is my lady? Is my father doing well? How's my Juliet? I asked that question twice because nothing else can be wrong if she's well.

Balthasar. Then she's well and nothing is wrong. Her body is now lying in Capulet's tomb, and her soul lives with the angels in heaven. I saw her being buried in her family's tomb, then came here to tell you the news. Please forgive me for bringing you such bad news, but you hired me to do this job, sir.

Romeo. Is this really true? Then I rebel against you, stars! You know where I live. Bring me some ink and paper and hire some horses. I'm going back there tonight.

Balthasar. Please sir, don't be rash. You look pale and wild. You'll hurt yourself if you just run off like this.

Romeo. Oh, you're wrong! Just go and do what I asked you to do. Don't you have a letter for me from the Friar?

Balthasar. No, my good lord.

Romeo. Never mind. Go on now and hire those horses. I'll be with you just now.

Exit Balthasar

Well, Juliet. I'll lie with you tonight. The only thing is for me to work out how to do it. Destructive thoughts come quickly to people who're desperate. I remember a chemist - and he lives nearby. I noticed he carries around old bunches of weeds, wears tattered clothes and has bushy eyebrows. He looks insignificant. Misery seems to have worn him down to the bones. He has a tortoise shell hanging from his old shop. There's also a stuffed alligator and other animals around the place. He's got strange fish and lots of empty, straggly boxes on his shelves. There are green earthen pots, bladders and musty seeds, odd strings, and old pressed rose petals on display.

When I noticed his poverty I said to myself, if anyone ever needed poison - which they would put you to death if you sold in Mantua - this miserable beggar would sell it to them. This idea came to me before I needed the poison. Now I need this poor man to sell it to me. As I remember, this should be his house. Hang on! Today's a holiday. The beggar's shop is closed. Hey! Chemist! (Apothecary)

Chemist. Who's making that racket?

Romeo. Come here, man. I see you're poor. Here are forty ducats. Give me a gram of poison. I want something that will shoot through the veins as quickly as gunpowder through a cannon.

Chemist. I have lethal poisons like that, but it's not legal in Mantua to sell them, you know. The penalty is death.

Romeo. You're so poor and wretched, yet you're afraid to die? Your cheeks are gaunt because of hunger. Your eyes show how much you're starving and oppressed. It's clear to everyone you're a beggar. The world and its laws are not your friend. If the world ever made a law to make you rich, then you should be afraid to break it. As it stands, you're poor, so break the law and take this. (Holds out money).

Chemist. It's my poverty, not my will that makes me take this.

Romeo. Then I appeal to your poverty, not your will.

Chemist. (Gives Romeo poison) Put this in any liquid you want and drink it. Even if you were as strong as twenty men, it will get rid of you instantly.

Romeo. (Gives chemist money) Here's your gold. This is worse poison to men's souls, and it commits more murders in this wicked world than these poor poisons you're not allowed to sell. I've sold you poison. It's not the other way around. Goodbye. Buy food and put on a little weight. I'll take this medicine - not poison - with me to Juliet's grave. I have to use it there.

They exit

Enter, Friar John

Frair John. Holy Franciscan Friar! Hi Brother!

Enter Friar Lawrence

Frair Lawrence. That sounds like Friar John. Welcome back from Mantua. What did Romeo say? Where's the letter he wrote? Give it to me?

Frair John. I went to find one of our brothers to accompany me to Mantua. He was here in this city visiting the sick. Once I'd found him, the town officials suspected that we were both in a house that had been hit by the plague. They quarantined the house, sealed up the doors and wouldn't let us out. That's where I've been. I couldn't go to Mantua.

Friair Lawrence. So, who took my letter to Romeo then?

Friar John. I couldn't send it. Here it is (he gives F. Lawrence a letter). I couldn't get a messenger to bring it back to you either because they were scared of spreading the infection.

Friar L. What bad luck! The letter was not just a greeting with a pleasant message. It contained very important information, and neglecting it was a very dangerous thing. Friar John, go right away. Get me an iron crow bar and bring it immediately to my cell.

Friar J. I'll go and get it right away for you, brother.

Exit Friar John

Friar L. I must go to the tomb alone now. Juliet will wake up within 3 hours. She'll be very angry with me that Romeo hasn't been told about any of what has happened. I'll have to write to Mantua again and let her stay at my cell until Romeo can get here. Poor living corpse. She's shut inside a dead man's tomb.

S C E N E 1 1 1

Enter Paris and his page

Paris. Give me your torch, boy. Go and stand over there. Put the torch out so no one can see me. Hide under those yew trees over there. Listen with your ears to the ground and make sure no one is coming into the graveyard. The ground is quite loose because it's been dug up so many times, so you should hear any footsteps. If anyone gets near, whistle to me. Give me those flowers and do what I told you to. Go!

Page puts out his torch and gives Paris the flowers

Page. (Aside) I'm kind of afraid to stand alone here in the graveyard. I'll have to take the risk though.

Page moves aside

Paris. (Scatters flowers at Juliet's closed tomb). Sweet flower, I'm spreading flowers over your bridal bed. O woe! Your cover is dust and stones. I'll water these flowers every night with sweet water. Failing that, I'll water them with tears and moans. I'll have a ritual for you each night. I'll put flowers on your grave and weep for you.

Page whistles

The boy is warning me that someone's coming. Who could be wandering around here at this time of night.They're ruining my rituals for my true love. I wonder if they have a torch? I have to hide in the darkness for a while.

Paris moves away from the tomb. Enter Romeo and Balthasar.

Romeo. Give me that pickaxe and the crowbar (takes them from Balthasar). Here, take this letter. Deliver it to my lord and father early in the morning (gives the letter to Balthasar). Give me the light (takes torch from Balthasar). Swear on your life that whatever you see or hear, you'll stand away from me and not interrupt my plans. I'm going down into this bed of death, partly because I want to see my lady's face, but mainly because I have to take a precious ring off her dead finger. I have to use that ring for a very important purpose. So, stay away.
If you get a bit nosey and dare to come back to spy on what I'm going to do, I swear, I'll tear your body apart limb by limb and scatter the bits about the graveyard for the hungry animals to eat. I'm more savage and wild in this than a hungry tiger or the raging sea.

Balthasar. I'll go, sir. I won't bother you.

Romeo. That's the way to show your friendship to me. Take this (gives Balthasar money). Live and be prosperous. Goodbye good fellow.

Balthasar. (Aside) Despite what he said, I'll hide somewhere nearby to watch what he's up to. I don't trust that wild look on his face.

Balthasar moves aside and falls asleep

Romeo. (Speaking to the tomb) You disgusting mouth of death! You've stuffed yourself with the most precious person on earth. I'm going to force your rotten jaws open so I can force you to eat another body. (Romeo begins to open the tomb with his tools).

Paris. (Aside) This is that banished, arrogant Montague. He's the one who murdered my love's cousin. She died because she was grieving for Tybalt. Now Romeo's come here to disrespect the dead. I'll catch him. (To Romeo). Stop this vile work you're doing, Montague. Can you still want revenge on the dead? I've caught you, criminal! Give up and come with me. You're going to be put to death.

Romeo. I will indeed. That's why I came. Good and gentle young man, don't get on the wrong side of a desperate man. Just walk away and leave me. Think about the people who've died. Let them put fear in you. I beg you, young man, don't me push me. I don't want to commit another crime. I swear, I love you more than I love myself. I came with weapons to use against myself. Don't hang around. I want you to live and be able to say a madman showed you mercy and allowed you to run away.

Paris. I'm going nowhere! I'm arresting you as a criminal.

Romeo. Are you going to test me? Okay, then. Let's fight boy!

Romeo and Paris fight

Page. Oh, Lord. They're fighting. I'll go and call the watchman.

Exit Page

Paris. (Falls) Oh, I've been stabbed. If you're really merciful, open the tomb so I can lie with Juliet.

Paris dies

Romeo. Okay. I will. Let me look at this face. It's Mercutio's relative, noble Count Paris. What did my man say, I was so taken up with worry, I wasn't really listening. I think he said that Paris was going to marry Juliet. Is that what he said, or did I dream it? Maybe I'm just crazy. Maybe I just heard him talk about Juliet and assumed all kinds of things. Oh, give me your hand. We both have had such bad luck. I'll bury you in a good grave.
Romeo opens the tomb to reveal Juliet inside

A grave? Oh no! This is a lantern, dead young man. Here lies Juliet and her beauty makes this tomb a pleasant place, filled with light. Death, you're being buried by a dead man. (He lays Paris in the tomb).

How often are men happy just before they die. Oh, my love, my wife! Death has sucked the honey from your breath, yet it has no power over your beauty. You're not conquered! Your lips and cheeks are still red. Death hasn't turned them white.

Tybalt, are you lying there in your bloody sheet? What better favour can I do for you than to kill your enemy who killed you, using the same hand that caused you to die so young. Forgive me, cousin. Ah, dear Juliet, why are you still so beautiful? Should I believe that death - the monster - is in love with you, and that he keeps you here to be his mistress? To avoid that happening, I'll stay with you. I'll never leave this dark place again. I'll stay here with the worms that are your chamber maids. I'll set up my everlasting rest here and forget all about the bad luck that have followed my weary flesh.

Eyes, take your last look. Arms, take your last embrace. Lips, the doors of breath, take your last kiss to seal the deal of death. (Romeo kisses Juliet and takes out the poison). Come bitter poison, come unsavoury guide. You desperate pilot, let's crash this tired ship against the rocks. Here's to my love! (drinks the poison). Oh, chemist. You were right. Your drugs work quickly. So with a kiss, I die.

Romeo dies

Enter Friar Lawrence with lantern, crow and spade

Friar L. Saint Francis, give me speed. My feet have stumbled over gravestones so many times tonight. Who's there?

Balthasar. A friend. I know you well.

Friar L. God bless you. Can you tell me, good friend, what's that light over there? The one that lights up the tomb for worms and skulls without eyes. It looks like it's coming from Capulet's tomb.

Balthasar. It is, holy sir. My master is there. The one you care about.

Friar L. Who's it?

Balthasar. Romeo.

Friar L. How long has he been in there?

Balthasar. For a full half hour.

Friar L. Please come to the tomb with me.

Balthasar. I dare not, sir. My master doesn't know I'm still here. He thinks I'm gone. He threatened me with death if I stayed to watch what he was doing.

Friar L. Stay then. I'll go alone. I'm scared. I'm really scared that something terrible has happened.

Balthasar. As I was sleeping under this yew tree, here. I dreamt that my master was fighting with someone and he killed him.

Friar L. (Approaches the tomb). Romeo! Oh no! Whose blood is this that stains the stony entrance of the tomb? What's the meaning of these abandoned, dirty swords? Why are they in this place of peace? (Looks inside the tomb). Romeo! You're so pale! Who else? What? Paris too? And covered in blood? When did these terrible things happen? The lady's waking up.

Juliet wakes up

Juliet. Oh, Friar, you're a sight for sore eyes. Where's Romeo? I remember exactly where I am. Where is my Romeo?

A noise sounds from outside the tomb

Friar L. I hear a noise, lady. Come out of the tomb. A greater power than us has ruined our careful plans. Come, come away. Your husband lies dead near to you. Paris too. Come, I'll put you with the sisterhood of holy nuns. The watchman is coming, so don't stay, or he'll question you. Come, let's go, good Juliet. I dare not stay any longer.

Juliet. There's no way I'm leaving. I'm staying right here.

Exit Friar Lawrence

What's this? A cup, held in my true love's hand? He died of poison, I see. How rude of him to drink it all. He didn't leave any to help me afterwards. I'll kiss his lips. Hopefully some of the poison left there will help me die. Your lips are warm.

Enter watchmen and Paris's page

Chief watchman. (To Page) Lead, boy. Which way?

Juliet. Oh, no. Noise! I'll have to be quick here. Oh, great! A knife. My body will be your sheath. Rust inside my body and let me die (stabs herself with Romeo's dagger and dies).

Page. This is the place. There, where that torch is burning.

Chief watchman. The ground is bloody. Some of you go and search the graveyard. Arrest whoever you find.

Exit some watchmen

Pitiful sight! The Count is dead and Juliet is bleeding. Her body is still warm which means she's just died, even though she's been buried here for two days. Go tell the Prince. Run to the Capulets. Wake up the Montagues. Have some more people search around.

Exit more watchmen

We see the result of all this pain. Yet we have to investigate the whole cause of this disaster.

Re-enter second watchman with Romeo's servant, Balthasar

Second watchman. Here's Romeo's servant. We found him in the churchyard.

Chief watchman. Hold him in custody until the Prince gets here.

Re-enter third watchman with Friar Lawrence

Third watchman. I found this Friar trembling, sighing and weeping. We took this pickaxe and spade from him as he was leaving this side of the churchyard.

Chief watchman. That's suspicious. Hold him too.

Enter the Prince with attendants

Prince. What's all this so early in the morning that I have to wake up from my sleep?

Enter Capulet and Lady Capulet

Capulet. What's all the noise about?

Lady Capulet. Oh, the people in the street are crying, 'Romeo!' Other's are saying, 'Juliet!' And some, 'Paris'. They're all running screaming and shouting towards our tomb.

Prince. What are they crying about?

Chief watchman. Prince, Count Paris is lying here dead. Romeo is also dead and Juliet is dead again. This time she's not been dead for long.

Prince. I want you to investigate how all this happened.

Chief watchman. Here are the Friar and dead Romeo's servant. They've both been found with tools which could be used to open the tombs.

Capulet. Oh, heavens! Oh, wife, look at how our daughter is bleeding. That dagger is mistaken. It should be in that Montague's back, instead it's in my daughter's chest.

Lady Capulet. Oh my! All this sight of death reminds me of my own age, and the possibility of dying soon.

Enter Montague

Prince. Come, Montague. You're up early to see your son and heir down early.

Montague. Oh, Prince, my wife died tonight. She was so sad because of Romeo's exile, she grieved to death. What more pain must I endure in my old age?

Prince. Look and you'll see.

Montague. (To Romeo) Oh you rude boy. Where are your manners? It's not right for a son to beat his father to the grave.

Prince. Be quiet for a while until we can find out what's wrong here. I want to find out what really happened and then I will lead you in your grief. In the meantime, be patient. Let's have a talk with the suspects.

Friar L. I'm the prime suspect, yet I was able to do the least. I'm under most suspicion because I was here at the time of the murder. And here I stand, you can question and punish me. I've already condemned myself.

Prince. Tell us what you know, this instant.

Friar L. I'll be quick because I only have a little while left to live. To make a long story short: Romeo was Juliet's husband. I married them. Their wedding day was the same day Tybalt died. It was his untimely death that caused Romeo to be banished from the city. It was Romeo Juliet was pining for, not Tybalt.

You tried to get her out of her sadness by forcing her to marry the Count. She came to me desperate for me to devise a plan to get her out of the second marriage, and threatened to kill herself if I didn't. It was then I gave her a sleeping potion to make it look like she was dead. Meanwhile, I wrote to Romeo to tell him to come and help take her out from the grave when the potion wore off. However, the person who was supposed to take my letter, Friar John couldn't make it to him, and returned the letter to me last night.

When I realised it was time for Juliet to wake up, I came by myself to remove her from the grave. I was going to keep her secret in my cell until I could contact Romeo. But when I got here, just minutes before she was supposed to wake up, Paris and Romeo were already dead. When she woke up, I begged her to come out of the tomb with me and have some patience in this tragedy. A noise scared me from the tomb, and she was too desperate to come with me. As it seems, she killed herself. I know all this, and Juliet's nurse knows about the wedding. If any of this is my fault, let my old life be taken and let me suffer most of the punishment.

Prince. We've always known you as a holy man. Where's Romeo's servant? What does he have to say for himself?

Balthasar. I told my master news about Juliet's death. He then rode in from Mantua to this tomb. (He shows a letter). He gave me this letter to give to his father. He went into the tomb and threatened to kill me if I didn't leave him alone.

Prince. Give me the letter. I'll have a look at it. (He takes the letter from Balthasar). Where's the Count's servant, the one who raised the alarm? Boy, why was your master here?

Page. He brought flowers to put on his lady's grave. He told me to stand away from here, so I did. Someone with a torch came to open the tomb, so my master drew his sword on him. When I saw that I ran away to call the watchman.

Prince. (Skims the letter). This letter confirms the Friar's story. It tells of their love and the message about her death. And here he writes that he bought poison from a poor chemist, then came to this tomb to die and lie with Juliet.

Where are the enemies? Capulet! Montague! Do you see what misery your hate has brought about? Heaven has found a way to kill the sources of your joy with love. For my part, because I ignored your feuds, I've also lost several of my family. We were all punished.

Capulet. Oh brother Montague, give me your hand. This is my daughter's dowry. I can ask you for nothing else.

Montague. But I can give you more. I'll make a statue of her in pure gold. And as long as this city is called Verona, there will be no other statue praised more than that of the true and faithful Juliet.

Capulet. I'll also make a similar statue of Romeo to lie next to Juliet's. They were only poor sacrifices of our enmity.

Prince. There is a dark peace this morning. The sun is too sorrowful to show itself. Let's go and talk about thise sad things some more. Some will be forgiven and some will be punished. There never was a story more painful than that of Juliet and her Romeo.

They all exit.

Enter Friar Lawrence and Paris

Friar Lawrence. On Thursday, sir? That's so soon.

Paris. My father-in-law to be, Capulet, wants it that way. I'm not going to tell him no.

Friar Lawrence. You say you don't even know if the lady wants you or not. That's a bit iffy, isn't it? I don't like it one bit.

Paris. She's over-the-top with her grieving for Tybalt, so she's not really interested in love at the moment. People don't really fall in love when they're mourning, do they? Her father is not pleased about the way she's grieving so desperately. He thinks that getting her to marry soon will help her get over all the sadness and crying. Having someone by her side will help her tremendously. There! You know the real reason for the rushed marriage now.

Friar L. (Aside) I wish I didn't know the real reason why this marriage has to be stopped. (To Paris) Look, sir, here's the lady herself to see me.

Enter Juliet

Paris. So glad to see you, my lady and my wife.

Juliet. That may be the case, sir, but only after I'm married.

Paris. Well, there's no 'may be' about it. We're getting married on Thursday.

Juliet. What will be will be.

Friar L. Isn't that the truth.

Paris. Have you come to make a confession to Father?

Juliet. To answer that question would be like making a confession to you.

Paris. Don't tell him you don't love me.

Juliet. I will confess to you that I love him.

Paris. I hope you can say the same about me.

Juliet. If I do, it will be worth more if I say it behind your back than to your face.

Paris. Poor soul. Your face has suffered many tears.

Juliet. My face looked bad even before I started crying.

Paris. You're being unfair to your face by saying that.

Juliet. No. That's the truth.

Paris. Your face is mine, and you've said unfair things about it.

Juliet. That may be true because my face is certainly not my own. Do you have time to see me now, Father, or should I come to see you after evening mass?

Friar L. I've got time for you, my sad daughter, right now. Paris, sorry, can we have some privacy?

Paris. God forbid I should disturb your meeting. Juliet, on Thursday I'll wake you early (kisses her). Until then, goodbye and keep this holy kiss.

Exit Paris

Juliet. Oh, shut the door. And when you've done that, come and cry with me. I'm past hope, past cure, past help.

Friar L. Oh, Juliet! I already know why you're so sad. I'm at my wits end. I hear you must marry this Count on Thursday.

Juliet. Don't remind me about that again unless you can help me solve the mess I'm in. If you're so wise and you can't help me solve this problem, at least tell me my decision to end it with this knife is a good one. (She shows him a knife). God joined my heart to Romeo's. You joined our hands. Before you use your hands which have joined Romeo and me, to join me to someone else, I will kill myself.
You have years of experience, give me some advice now about what to do, or this knife will make the decision for me. Don't hold out for too long because I'm impatient to die if you can't help me fix this.

Friar L. Hang on, daughter. I see some hope. Desperate times call for desperate measures and this plan is just that! If you would rather die than marry Count Paris, then perhaps you would be willing to try something close to death to get out of this shameful situation. If you're willing, then I have a plan.

Juliet. Anything. I'd rather jump off the highest tower than marry him. You can tell me to sit in a field of poisonous snakes or chain me up with ravishing bears, or shut me up every night in a haunted house full of dead, smelly bodies, or tell me to climb down a freshly-dug grave, or wrap me up with a dead man's shroud. I've been scared just hearing people talk about these things but I will do them at the drop of a hat if it means I can be a wife to my dear Romeo.

Friar L. Okay. Go home and be happy. Give your consent to marry Paris. Tomorrow is Wednesday. Tomorrow night, make sure that you're alone and don't let the Nurse stay with you in your room. (Shows her a vial). When you're ready to go to bed, take this vial, mix the contents with liquor and drink it. It will make you fall into a death-like sleep. Your pulse will stop. Your skin will be cold to the touch and you'll stop breathing. You will turn pale and your breathing will stop. It will look like you're dead and you won't be able to move at all. You'll remain in this state for forty-two hours, after which you will wake up and feel as though you've had a long, pleasant sleep.

Now, when the bridegroom comes to wake you in the morning on Thursday, he'll think you're dead. As is the custom, you will be dressed in your best clothes, put in a coffin and be carried to the Capulet's family tomb. In the meantime, I'll let Romeo know about the plan. He'll come, wait for you to wake up, then take you away with him to Mantua. This fool-proof plan will release you from this shameful situation unless you chicken out like a little, scaredy woman.

Juliet. Give me the vial! Give it to me! Don't talk to me about fear.

Friar L. (Gives her the vial). Now, run along. Be strong and prosperous in this plan. I'll send a friar to Mantua right away with the letter to Romeo.

Juliet. Love will give me strength to do this. Goodbye, dear Father.

They exit separately
End of scene 1

S C E N E I I

Enter Capulet, Lady Capulet, Nurse and two or three servants

Capulet. (Gives paper to first servant) Invite all the people on this list.

Exit first servant

(To second servant) Go and hire twenty of the best cooks.

Second servant. Sir, bad cooks can't lick their own fingers, so only those that can lick their own fingers are going to be hired.

Capulet. Go on, now. We haven't got any spare time to mess around.

Exit second servant

This has come at a time when we're not even prepared for it. Has my daughter gone to see Friar Lawrence?

Nurse. Yes.

Capulet. Good. It might do her some good, the spoilt brat.

Juliet enters

Nurse. There she is! She's back from confession looking happy and pleased with herself.

Capulet. Hello, my stubborn child. Where were you?

Juliet. Where I learned to repent the sin of being rude and disobedient to you and your rules. I was instructed by Friar Lawrence to fall at your feet and beg your forgiveness (falls on her knees). Please forgive me, I beg you. From now on I'll do as I'm told.

Capulet. Send for the Count and tell him about this. I'll have this wedding done in the morning.

Juliet. I met him at the Friar's cell. I treated him with respect and love within all the right boundaries of being modest.

Capulet. Oh, well, I'm glad to hear this. This is good. Stand up.

Juliet stands up

This is the way it should be. I'll see the Count. Yes, fine. Go and get him. God knows, our entire city owes him a lot.

Juliet. Nurse, will you come with me to my room to help me sort out all this stuff I need for the wedding tomorrow?

Lady Capulet. It's not until Thursday. We've got plenty of time.

Capulet. Go, Nurse. Go with her. We'll have the wedding at the church tomorrow.

Exit Juliet and Nurse

Lady Capulet. We'll be short of supplies for the wedding party. It's already nearly nightfall.

Capulet. Don't worry about that. Everything will be fine. I'll see to it, wife. I promise. Go with Juliet and help dress her up. I'm not going to sleep tonight. I'll take the role of the housewife this once.

Lady Capulet exits

What's going on? They're all gone? Well, I'll walk to the Count's place myself and tell him about tomorrow. My heart is so wonderfully light now that this wayward girl has learned her lesson and is to be married.

Capulet exits

Enter Juliet and Nurse

Juliet. Yes, those clothes are the best. But dear Nurse, can you please leave me alone tonight. I have to say a lot of prayers to ask for blessings and guidance on my troubled and wayward life.

Lady Capulet. What's up? Are you busy? Do you need my help?

Juliet. No, madam. We've already decided on the best outfit for me to wear at the wedding. So, if you don't mind, I'd like to be left alone, please. Let the Nurse help you tonight because I'm sure you have your hands full to cater for this sudden preparation.

Lady Capulet. Good night. Get to bed and have your rest. I know you need it.

Exit Lady Capulet and Nurse

Juliet. Good bye. God only knows when we will meet again. There is a cold fear flowing through my veins. It almost freezes up any warmth left in my body. Shall I call Nurse back to comfort me? What would she do to help though? In my desperate state I need to act alone. Come vial (holds out the vial) What if it doesn't work at all. If it doesn't, I'll be married in the morning. No, this will not be. This knife will take care of that (lays her life down).

What if the friar actually mixed poison to kill me. After all, he might be worried that if he does this marriage he'll be disgraced because he's already married me to Romeo. I'm scared that it's poison. But it should be safe. He's a holy man, trusted by many. What if I wake up in the tomb before Romeo comes to get me? It'll be terrible and scary because there is no air to breathe in there. Will I be dead by the time Romeo comes to save me?

If I live, I'll be in there surrounded by death and darkness and the terror of being in the grave with all those horrible, scary dead people. There will be bones of my ancestors, many hundred years old. Even Tybalt's body is in there, freshly buried. His corpse is still rotting. They say that at certain times in the night the spirits of the dead wake up. Oh Gosh, no! I'll wake up and smell the awful stench and hear the shrieks of the ghosts. Their screams have driven the living mad.

Oh, if I wake up too early, won't I go insane being in the midst of all these horrible things? I might start playing with my ancestors' bones or pull Tybalt's body of of his death shroud. I might bash out my own brains with one of my ancestors' bones in my madness. I think I see my cousin's ghost. He's looking for Romeo because he died by his sword. Wait, Tybalt, wait! Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here's a drink. I drink to you.

She drinks from the vial and falls down on the bed, hidden by the bed curtains.

Enter Lady Capulet and Nurse

Lady Capulet. Hang on. Take these keys and get some more spices, Nurse.

Nurse. They're asking for dates and quinces in the pastry.

Enter Capulet

Capulet. Come on! Wake up! The second cockerel has crowed. The curfew bell has been rung. It's 3 o'clock. Get the baked meats, Angelica. Don't worry about the cost.

Nurse. Why don't you go to bed. You'll be sick tomorrow. You've been up all night.

Capulet. What are you on about? I've stayed up lots of times before, and for less important things. I've never been sick before.

Lady Capulet. Ah, yes. You've been a lady's man in your time. But I keep my eye on what you're getting up to these days.

Exit Lady Capulet and Nurse

Capulet. She's such a jealous woman!

Enter 3 or 4 servants with spits, logs and baskets

Now, guys. What have you got there?

First servant. Stuff for the cook, sir. But I don't know what they are.

Capulet. Go on, then. Hurry up.

Exit first servant

(To second servant) Bring drier logs. Call Peter. He'll show you where the dry ones are.

Second servant. I'm clever enough to go and look for them. I don't have to bother Peter about this.

Exit second servant

Capulet. Okay, then. That guy is pretty funny. He's got logs for brains though. My goodness! It's daylight already. The Count will be here with a band. He said he would. I think I hear him coming now.

Music plays offstage

Nurse! Wife! Hello! Nurse!

Enter Nurse

Go wake up Juliet and get her dressed. I'll go chat with Paris and keep him occupied. Hurry up because the bridegroom is already here. Hurry up, I say!

Nurse. Mistress! Hey, Mistress! I bet she's fast asleep. Hey, lamb, you lazy bones. Why, love, madam, sweetheart, bride. Why won't you answer me? I bet you're taking your beauty sleep now. After all, from tonight Count Paris won't let you rest. God forgive me. Alleluia and amen. How sound asleep she is! I have to wake her up. Madam! Madam! I bet the Count could wake you up. (Opens the bed curtains) What? Are you still dressed in your clothes and sleeping again? I need to wake you. Lady! Lady! Lady! Oh no! My lady's dead. Oh, curse the day I was born. Get me a strong drink. My lord! My lady!

Enter Lady Capulet

Lady Capulet. What's all this racket about?

Nurse. Oh, sad day.

Lady Capulet. What's the matter?

Nurse. Look, look! What a sad day.

Lady Capulet. Oh my! Oh my! My child, my only reason for living. Wake up, open your eyes, or I'll die! Help! Help! Call for help!

Enter Capulet

Capulet. Come on and bring Juliet here. Her bridegroom has arrived.

Nurse. She's dead, deceased, she's dead. Curse the day!

Lady Capulet. Curse the day! She's dead, she's dead, she's dead!

Capulet. What? Let me see her. Oh no, she's cold. Her blood has stopped flowing and her joints are stiff. There's no life in her lips. She looks like a pretty, little flower, killed by too much frost.

Nurse. Oh, sad day!

Lady Capulet. So sad.

Capulet. Death has taken her away to make me cry, but now it's tied up my tongue as well and I can't speak.

Enter Friar Lawrence, Count Paris and musicians

Friar Lawrence. Is the bride ready to go to church?

Capulet. Ready to go, but never to return. (To Paris) Oh son, death has taken your wife on the night before the wedding day. There she lies. She was a flower, but death deflowered her. Death is my son-in-law. Death is my heir. Death married my daughter. I'll die and leave Death everything - life, wealth - everything belongs to him.

Paris. Have I waited so long for today just to see this?

Lady Capulet. Cursed, unhappy, wretched, hateful day. This is the most miserable day of all time. I had but one child - one poor, loving child. She was the only thing I rejoiced and had solace in. Now cruel death has stolen her from me.

Nurse. O woe! Oh woeful day! The saddest and most painful day that I've ever, ever seen. Oh day, oh day, oh day. Oh hateful day! There was never a day as black as this one.

Paris. She was tricked, divorced, wronged, spited and killed. Most detestable Death tricked her. Oh love! Oh life! My love is dead.

Capulet. Despised, distressed, hated, martyred, killed. Why does this have to happen at a time like this. Why did death have to ruin our wedding. Oh child, Oh child! You're my soul, but now you're dead. My child is dead and with her, all my joys will be buried.

Friar Lawrence. Be quiet. Stop yelling and screaming and reflect for a while. Heaven gave her to you, and now it's taken her back. She's in a good place now. You couldn't stop her from dying some day. Now heaven gives her eternal life. The highest you could hope was for her to marry a wealthy man. Your idea of heaven was that she became rich and moved up the ladder. And now you're crying because she has moved up into heaven itself? What kind of love is this that you go mad when your child is so well. A good marriage is not necessarily one where the woman has been married for a long time. A good marriage can be one where she was happy in it even though she died young. Dry up your tears and put your rosemary on this beautiful corpse. As the custom is, dress her in her best clothes and take her body to the church. It's natural to feel sad, but really, we should be feeling happy.

Capulet. All the things that we organised for the wedding will now be used for her funeral. Our happy music will now be sad. Our rejoicing hymns will be sad music. Our bridal flowers will be used to bury the corpse and everything else will now have the opposite purpose

Friar Lawrence. Sir, you go in. And madam, go with him. You too, Sir Paris. Prepare to follow this lovely corpse to her grave, everyone. The heavens must be punishing you for some sin in your past. Don't make her more angry by trying to go against her will.

Exit Capulet, Lady Capulet, Paris and Friar Lawrence

First musician. Let's just put away our pipes and go home now.

Nurse. That's right, guys. Just pack them away and go. As you know, this is a very sad situation.

First musician. I know. Things will get better.

Enter Peter

Peter. Musicians, Oh, musicians, 'Heart's Ease', 'Heart's Ease'. Please play that for me, or I'll die.

First musician. Why, 'Heart's Ease'?

Peter. Because my heart's singing, 'My Heart is Full Of Woe.' Play me some happy sad song to comfort me, please.

First musician. We're not playing sad songs. This is no time to play at all.

Peter. You won't then?

First musician. No.

Peter. Then I'll give it to you soundly.

First musician. What will you give us?

Peter. Not a penny, for sure. But I'll tell everyone you're crooks.

First musician. At least we're not servants.

Peter. I'll hit you across the head with a servant's knife. I warn you. I'm not kidding. You hear me?

First musician. If you make us sing, you'll hear us.

Second musician. Please put your knife away and stop messing around.

Peter. Messing around? I'll mess around as much as I want and I'll put down my knife when I'm good and ready. (Sings)

(Speaks) Why does it say 'silver sound'? What does 'music with her silver sound' mean? What do you say, Simon Catling?

First musician. Well, sir, because silver has a sweet sound.

Peter. That's rubbish! What do you say, Hugh Rebeck?

Second musician. I say, 'silver sound' because musicians play to earn silver.

Peter. That's a rubbish answer too! What do you say, James Soundpost?

Third musician. Well, I don't know what to say.

Peter. Oh, excuse me, but you're the singer. Let me tell you the answer. It says, 'music with her silver sound because musicians have no gold to make musical instruments with.

(Sings) Then music with her silver sound

First musician. What an annoying man he is!

Benvolio. I'm begging you, Mercutio. Please let's stop right here and now. It's boiling hot outside and the Cauplets are roaming about. If we meet them there's no way we'll escape a fight. You know how hot-blooded people get when it's hot.

Mercutio. You know, you're like one of those guys who walks into a bar, puts his sword on the counter and says, 'I hope I don't have to use you.' And by the time he's had his second drink, he draws the sword on the barman for no reason at all.

Benvolio. Am I really like that?

Mercutio. Oh, Come on! You're as hot-headed as the next guy. Someone only has to do the smallest thing for you to fly off the handle. And when you want to fly off the handle, you'll find any reason to do it.

Benvolio. So what.

Mercutio. If there were two men like you, we'd have only one because pretty soon, one would kill the other. You would fight with a man over the fact that he had one more or one less hairs on his beard than you do. You would fight with a man for cracking nuts, simply because you have hazel eyes. Only you would find that a reason to start a fight. Your head is as full of quarrels as an egg is full of yolk. I suppose that fits right up your street since your head has been beaten just like scrambled eggs because of all your fights. You have fought with a man just for coughing in the street because he woke up your dog which was lying in the sun. Didn't you fall out with your tailor for wearing his new suit before Easter? And with another for tying his new shoes with old shoe laces? And now you've got the guts to teach me about controlling myself?

Benvolio. If I was in the habit of fighting the way you are, my life insurance policy would only be good for an hour and a quarter.

Mercutio. That's stupid talk.

Enter Tybalt, Petruchio and some other Capulets

Benvolio. Now, look! Here comes the Capulets.

Mercutio. I couldn't care less.

Tybalt. (To his friends) Follow me closely. I'm going to talk to them. (To the Montagues) Good evening, gentlemen. Can I have a word with one of you?

Mercutio. You just want one word? Why not couple it with something else. Make it a word and a blow, perhaps?

Tybalt. I'm ready for that, if you give me a reason.

Mercutio. Coudn't you find a reason without me giving you one?

Tybalt. Mercutio, you hang out with Romeo.

Mercutio. Hang out? Do you think we're musicians? If we were musicians, you would hear nothing but noise. Here's my fiddle (his sword) I'll use this to make you dance, man!

Benvolio. We're out here in public where everyone can see us. Let's go somewhere private and talk about this sensibly or go away.

Enter Romeo

Tybalt. Well, peace be with you. Here comes the man I'm looking for.

Mercutio. He's not your man.

Tybalt. Romeo. There's only one name for you, a villain.

Romeo. Tybalt, I have a reason to like you. This is why I'm putting aside the rage I feel right now because of your name-calling. I'm not a villain. I see you don't know me, so goodbye.

Tybalt. This won't make all the stuff you've done to me any better. Turn around and draw your sword.

Romeo. I disagree. I've never hurt you. I like you better than you can understand, until you know the reason why. So, good Capulet, the name I love like my own, just believe me and let's leave it at that.

Mercutio. You can't submit to him like that. It's dishonourable! (Draws his sword) Tybalt, you rat catcher, you can fight with me.

Tybalt. What do you want from me?

Mercutio. Good king of cats, I'll have one of your nine lives upfront. Depending on how things go after that, I'll beat the other eight out of you. Take your sword out of its sheath or I'll beat you about the ears with mine before you have it drawn.

Tybalt. Okay. I'll fight you, if that's what you want. (Draws his sword).

Romeo. Gentle, Mercutio. put your sword away.

Mercutio. (To Tybalt) Come on! Your draw.

Mercutio and Tybalt fight

Romeo. (Draws his sword) Draw your sword, Benvolio. Let's beat down their weapons. Gentlemen, you should be ashamed. Stop this fight! Tybalt, Mercutio! The Prince has banned fighting in the streets of Verona. Stop you two!

Romeo tries to break up the fight. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm

Petruchio. Let's get out of here, Tybalt.

   Exit Tybalt, Petruchio and other Capulets

Mercutio. He's hurt me. I curse you both and your families. Did he get away without a scratch?

Benvolio. What. Are you hurt?

Mercutio. It's only a scratch. Just a scratch, but it hurts like hell. Where's my page? Go, boy. Get me a doctor.

Exit Mercutio's page

Romeo. Be brave, man. It can't be that bad.

Mercutio. No? It's not as deep as a well or wide as a church door, but it's bad enough to do damage. Ask for me tomorrow and you'll find that I'm a dead man. I'm done for, man. I curse both their families. I swear, I can't believe that dog, that rat, mouse, cat has tried to stab me to death. He's a villain and fights like he's learned from a sword-fencing manual. Why on earth did you come between us? He stabbed me from under your arm.

Romeo. I thought I was doing the right thing.

Mercutio. Take me inside a house, Benvolio, or I'll faint. Curse your houses and your families. They've turned me into food for worms.

   Exit Mercutio and Benvolio

Romeo. This gentleman, a close friend of the Prince and my best friend was mortally wounded because of me. He was only trying to defend my reputation from Tybalt's slander. Tybalt, we've been related for only an hour. Oh, sweet Juliet. Your beauty has made me soft. You've made taken apart my bravery.

Enter Benvolio

Benvolio. Oh, Romeo, brave Mercutio is dead. That brave spirit has gone to heaven. But it was way too early for him to leave this earth.

Romeo. What has happened here today will negatively affect the future. Today starts the sadness and worries that will end in days to come.

Enter Tybalt

Benvolio. Here comes the furious Tybalt again.

Romeo. He's alive and truimphant and Mercutio is dead. I've had enough of peace and leniency. It's time to give vent to my anger. Now, Tybalt. Call me a 'villain' again. Mercutio's soul is only a little way above our heads. He's waiting for either you or me to accompany him to heaven.

Tybalt. You hung out with him here, and you're the one that's going to hang out with him there.

Romeo. This fight will determine that.

They fight and Tybalt falls and dies

Benvolio. Romeo, let's get out of here. People are around and Tybalt is dead. Don't stand here in a daze. The Prince will put you to death if you get caught. Get out of here, now.

Romeo. I have such bad luck.

Benvolio. Why are you still here?

   Romeo exits

Enter citizens of the watch

Citizens. Which way did he run? The guy who fought with Tybalt. Which way?

Benvolio. Tybalt is lying over there.

Citizens. (To Tybalt) get up sir. Come with us. By the authority of the Prince, you must obey us.

Enter Prince, Montague, Caupulet, Lady Montague and others

Prince. Where are the vile men who started this fight?

Benvolio. Oh, noble Prince. I can tell you everything you need to know about this awful situation. That's Tyalt lying there. He was killed by Romeo because he killed your relative, brave Mercutio.

Lady Capulet. Tybalt, my cousin! He's my brother's son. Oh Prince, Oh nephew, Husband! Oh, my nepew is dead. Prince, if you're fair you'll kill someone from the Montague family to revenge Tybalt's killing. Oh my nephew, my nephew!

Prince. Benvolio, who started this bloody fight?

Benvolio. Tybalt did. Romeo spoke to him fairly. He told him that the fight between him and Mercutio was silly and that you would be angry because of it. All this he said in a soft, gentle voice, kneeling down to show respect. But in spite of all this, Tybalt wouldn't make peace. Tybalt and Mercutio started fighting one another. Romeo shouted at them, 'stop friends. Break it up!' Then he jumped in between them thinking they would put their swords down, but Tybalt stabbed Mercutio under his arm and ran away. After a while he came back to Romeo, who, by this time was getting really angry at the whole thing. They started fighting as quick as lightening, and before I could draw my sword to stop them, Tybalt was killed. Romeo ran away after that. This is the truth. I swear on my life.

Lady Capulet. He's a relative of the Montagues. Of course he would lie for Romeo. He's not telling the truth. I'm sure twenty of them were involved in this, and between them they could only kill this one man. I beg you for justice, Prince. Romeo killed Tybalt so he should die.

Prince. Romeo killed him. He killed Mercutio. Who should now should pay the price for Mercutio's death?

Montague. Not Romeo, Prince. He was Mercutio's friend. His crime only did what the law would've done anyway, by taking Tybalt's life.

Prince. And for that offence, Romeo is exiled from Verona from now on. I'm involved in your rivalry because Mercutio was a relative of mine, and I'm hurt that he's dead because of your stupid feud. I'll punish you so severely, that you'll regret causing me this loss. I won't listen to any of your pleas or excuses. You can't get out of trouble by praying or bribery, so don't bother. Let Romeo leave this city at once. If he's found he'll be killed instantly. Take away this body and you'd better do what I say. Showing mercy by pardoning killers only causes more murders.

   They exit

S C E N E 1 1

Juliet. I can't wait for the sun to set so that the darkness of night could be here. It couldn't come fast enough because that's when I'll have Romeo in my arms, unseen by anyone else. The beauty of love is that lovers can see to make love in the dark. This is because love is blind. It loves the dark, so come on darkness and night!

Oh night, you widow dressed in black, come and surround me so I can surrender myself to my husband. Let me get over my innocence and shyness and learn how to satisfy my husband completely. Come, night. Come, Romeo. You're like day in night because you will lie on the wings of night, whiter than new snow on a raven's back.

Come, gentle night. Come loving, black-browed night. Give me my Romeo. And when I die, make him become stars of a beautiful constellation so that he may make the sky look so lovely, other people will fall in love with it too, and forget about the way they worshipped the sun. Oh, I've bought a mansion of love, but haven't moved in yet. In the same way, I now belong to Romeo but he's not had me yet. This day is so long and tedious, I feel like a child on the night before a party, waiting excitedly to wear my new clothes.

Enter Nurse with the rope ladder

Oh, here comes my nurse. She brings news! When she talks about Romeo, his name sounds beautiful even on her lips. Now nurse, what's the news? Is that the ladder for Romeo?

Nurse. Yeah, yeah. It's the rope ladder.

Juliet. Oh, no, what did you hear? Why are you so upset?

Nurse. It's horrible. He's dead, he's dead. It's awful. What a terrible day. He's gone, He's been killed. he's dead.

Juliet. Can heaven be so hateful?

Nurse. Romeo is hateful, not heaven. Oh Romeo, Romeo! Who would've thought it would be Romeo?

Juliet. What kind of devil are you to torment me like this? It's like I'm being tortured in hell. Has Romeo killed himself? If you say 'yes' that one word will be more deathly to me than a poisonous snake. I won't be myself if this is what happened. Tell me if he's been killed or not. 'Yes' or 'no' will determine my fate.

Nurse. I saw the wound. I saw it with my eyes. God bless that wound, there on his manly chest. A pitiful corpse, a bloody, pitiful corpse. Pale, pale as ashes, all soaked in blood. I fainted when I saw it.

Juliet. O, my heart is broken. I will imprison my eyes and never look at freedom again. My body will go back to this vile earth and lie there doing nothing. My body will lie with Romeo's in one sad coffin.

Nurse. Oh, Tybalt, Tybalt, the best friend I've ever had. He was so courteous and honest! I wish I didn't live long enough to see him dead.

Juliet. How awful this is! Romeo has been killed and Tybalt too? My dearest cousin and my dearest husband. Trumpets, play a song of doom. Who can stay alive if those two are gone?

Nurse. Tybalt is gone and Romeo is banished. Romeo killed Tybalt so he's been banished.

Juliet. Oh, Lord! did Romeo shed Tybalt's blood?

Nurse. Yes, he did. What a tragic day, all round.

Juliet. He's like a snake with the face of a flower. Like a dragon hiding in a beautiful cage. Beautiful tyrant. Fiendish angel. A raven with dove's feathers, a wolf dressed as a lamb. He's the opposite to what he seemed. A despised element that looked divine - like a damned saint, or an honourable villian. Oh, nature, what were you doing in hell when you put the spirit of a wicked man into someone who looked so sweet. There was never such an evil book with such a beautiful cover. I can't believe that deceit existed in such a gorgeous place.

Nurse. There is no trust, not faith, no honesty in men. They all lie. They all cheat. They're all evil. Where's my servant? I need a drink. All this trouble and grief make me feel old. Shame be on you, Romeo!

Juliet. I wish you get sores on your tongue for making such a wish. He was not born for this shame. Shame itself is ashamed to be a part of Romeo. He deserves to be honoured. I was mistaken for being so angry with him before.

Nurse. You can't speak well of him. He killed your cousin.

Juliet. Should I speak ill of my husband? Who's going to defend his name if his own wife for three hours is talking bad about him? I just want to know why he killed my cousin. I know my cousin, the villain. Maybe he would've killed my husband instead. I shouldn't cry now with sorrow of Tybalt's death. I should actually cry with joy because Romeo is alive. Tybalt would've killed him. The person who would've killed my husband is dead. This is comforting news.

There's no need to cry, is there? There is worse news than the death of Tybalt. News, that makes me want to die: 'Tybalt is dead. Romeo is banished.' That one word, 'banished' is worse than the death of ten thousand Tybalts. If Tybalt's death had been all that had happened, that would've been bad enough. But sorrow likes company. If she'd said, 'Tybalt is dead,' then followed it up with 'Your mother or father or both are also dead,' I would've grieved the normal way. But after saying 'Tybalt's dead,' to follow that up with, 'Romeo is banished' is like saying your mother, father, Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet are all dead. 'Romeo is banished' that news has no limit, no measure, no bound. No other words can express such pain.

Where's my father and mother, nurse?

Nurse. They're crying over Tybalt's corpse. Are you going to them? I'll take you there.

Juliet. Are they washing his wounds with tears? I'll cry my tears for Romeo's banishment when their tears are dry. Pick up the rope ladder. It's no use now, just like me. Both me and the rope ladder are in exile like Romeo. This rope ladder was made as a highway to my bed, but I'll now die a virgin widow. Let's go, rope ladder. Nurse, I'll lie down in my wedding bed. Let death, not Romeo, take my virginity.

Nurse. Go to your bedroom. I'll find Romeo to comfort you. I know where he is. Mark my words, Romeo will be here tonight. I'll go to him. He's hiding at Friar Lawrence's cell.

Juliet. (Gives the nurse a ring) Oh, find him and give him this ring, my true knight. Tell him to come and say his last goodbye to me.

Enter Friar Lawrence

Friar Lawrence. Romeo, come out, come out. You poor soul, you're attracted to trouble and calamity.

Enter Romeo

Romeo. Father, what's the news? What did the Prince say my punishment is going to be? What trouble is in store for me that I don't yet know about?

Friar Lawrence. You've had too much trouble lately. I'm sorry, but I've now got the news about the Prince's punishment.

Romeo. Is it any less than total destruction?

Friar Lawrence. He was gentler than that. He doesn't want you dead, just banished.

Romeo. Ha, banishment! Be kind to me and say he wants me dead. Exile is much worse than death. Please don't say I'm banished.

Friar Lawrence. You're only banished from Verona. There are lots of other places in this big, wide world.

Romeo. There is no world for me outside the walls of Verona. Only torture and hell is out there. So being banished from Verona is like being banished from the entire world. Being exiled from the world is death. Banishment is just another form of being put to death. It's like cutting my head off with an axe made of gold and smiling while I'm being killed.

Friar Lawrence. You rude and ungrateful boy. You should be put to death for what you did. The Prince was very kind to you, and actually took your side by offering to banish you instead. He showed you mercy. How can you not see that?

Romeo. It's torture, not mercy. Heaven is here because it's where Juliet lives. Every cat and dog and even little mice and other lowly animals can see her, but I won't be able to. Even the flies will have a better love life and honour than me. At least they can land on her hand and steal immortal blessings from her lips by kissing her. She's so pure that she blushes when her own lips touch one another in kiss. But Romeo cannot. He's banished. Flies can touch her hand, but I have to leave. Flies are free but I am banished. And still you say being exiled is not death? Haven't you got any poison, or sharp knife you could use to kill me quickly? Nothing is as disgraceful as being banished. The damned use the word 'banished' when they're in hell. It's a disgusting word. Yet, you, a holy man who absolves sins and professes to be my friend don't mind putting me together with that word, banishment?

Friar Lawrence. Are you crazy? Listen to me.

Romeo. Why, so that you can tell me again about banishment?

Friar Lawrence. I'll give you something to protect you against that word. When you're in trouble philosophy is always comforting. Philosophy will comfort you even though you're banished.

Romeo. You're still on about 'banished'! Forget philosophy. Unless philosophy can make a Juliet, move a town to another place, and reverse the Prince's verdict, it doesn't help me one bit. Stop talking now.

Friar Lawrence. Oh, so madmen like you have no ears.

Romeo. How could they, when wise men have no eyes?

Friar Lawrence. Let me talk to you about your situation.

Romeo. You can't talk about something you've never experienced. If you were as young as me and Juliet was in love with you and you'd been married just an hour in which time Tybalt was murdered. If you were love sick like me, and banished, then you could speak. Then you would tear your hair out and fall on the ground like I do now (Romeo falls to the ground) to measure your grave that hasn't been dug yet.

Knocking from off stage

Friar Lawerence. Get up. Someone's knocking. Hide yourself, good Romeo.

Romeo. I won't hide unless the mist from my sick heart comes out and covers me like fog.

Knocking

Friar Lawrence. Come on! They're still knocking. (To the person at the door) Who's there? (To Romeo) Get up, Romeo. They'll arrest you. (To the person at the door) Coming in a minute. (To Romeo) Stand up.

Run and hide in my study... Just a minute...For the love of God! Why're you being so stupid.... Coming!

Why're you knocking so hard? Where do you come from? what do you want?

Nurse. Let me come in and I'll tell you why. Lady Juliet sent me.

Friar Lawrence. (Opens the door) Welcome then.

Enter Nurse

Nurse. Oh, holy Friar, Oh tell me holy Friar, where's my lady's husband? Where's Romeo?

Friar Lawrence. There on the ground getting drunk by his own tears.

Nurse. Oh, he's acting just like my mistress. What a pitiful situation. She's blubbering and weeping too. (To Romeo) Stand up, stand up and be a man for Juliet's sake. Rise and stand.

Romeo. Nurse!

Nurse. Ah, sir. Death will come for everybody.

Romeo. Were you talking about Juliet? How is she? Does she think I'm just a cruel murderer because I've spoilt our joy so soon by killing her relative? Where is she? What does my secret wife say about our ruined love?

Nurse. Oh, she says nothing, sir. She only weeps and weeps. Then she falls on her bed. Then she sits up and calls out, Tybalt, then Romeo. Then she cries and falls down again.

Romeo. She's calling out my name like it was a bullet that killed her. It's as if it was was cursed and murdered her relative. Tell me Oh, Friar, in what part of my body is my name carved? Tell me so I can cut it out of me.

(He draws his dagger)

Friar Lawrence. Hang on. Don't act so desperate. You're a man, or at least you look like one. You cry like a woman, and your wild actions resemble a beast. You're a shameless woman who looks like a man or a misformed beast who's half-man. You've surprised me. I swear, I thought you were better than this. You've killed Tybalt. Will you now kill yourself and cause agony to the lady who is now a part of your life? Why do you complain so much about the heaven and earth? Birth and heaven and earth all three meet in you at the same time. Which one do you want to give up if they're all the same? You should be ashamed of yourself. You have so much talent, yet you want to abandon your love, your wit and your body because you don't put them to their proper use. It's like someone who hoards lots of money but never puts it to use by spending any.

Your body is just a wax figure without the good things and values that make up a man. The love you swore was a hollow lie. You're killing the love you vowed to cherish. Your mind is the very thing that should make your body and your love valuable, but it has mishandled both of them. You're behaving like an idiot soldier who sets off his own gunpowder because he has no sense to handle it properly. The very thing that's supposed to protect you is going to kill you. Get up, man! Your Juliet is alive. It was because of her you were almost killed earlier. You should be happy. Tybalt would've killed you but you killed him instead. Be happy about this. The law that was supposed to put you to death has given you exile instead. Be happy about that. You have lots of blessings in your life. Instead of enjoying the happiness life gives to you, you're pouting about bad luck and love like a spoilt little girl.

Listen, listen people who act like that die miserable. Go get your love as was decided at your wedding. Climb up to her bedroom and comfort her. But get out before the night watchman arrives for work. After that, escape to the city of Mantua where you'll live until we can find the right time to publicise your marriage, make peace with your friends and beg the Prince's pardon. We will welcome you back with twenty thousand times more joy than you'll have when you leave. Go ahead, Nurse. Give my regards to your lady and tell her to hurry everyone in the house to bed. I'm sure they'll want to do so because of the sadness they feel right now. Romeo will follow.

Nurse. Oh, lord. I could've stayed here all night to hear your good advice. Education is so wonderful!

Romeo, I'll tell Juliet you're coming.

Romeo. Do so, and tell her to be ready to tell me off.

Nurse. Here sir, this is a ring she wanted me to give you. (gives Romeo the ring). Hurry up, it's getting late.

Romeo. This makes me feel so much better.

Friar Lawrence. Now, go. Good night. This is what you need to do. Either go before the night watchman comes or leave at the break of day in disguise. Stay in Mantua. We're all born to die, I suppose. It's getting very late. She won't be coming down tonight. Believe me, if it wasn't for you being here, I would've gone to bed an hour ago.

Paris. These times of grief aren't good times for thinking about love and courting. Madam, good night. Give my regards to your daughter.

Lady Capulet. I will. And I'll find out what she thinks early in the morning. Tonight she's too tired with grief.

Capulet. Sir, Paris, I'll try my best to convince my daughter you're right for her. I think she'll do whatever I say, perhaps even more. I have no doubt about that. Wife, check on her before you go to bed. Talk to her about Paris's love for her, and tell her that I'll talk to her on Wednesday - wait, what day is it today?

Paris. Monday, my lord.

Capulet. Monday! Ha, ha. Well, Wednesday is too soon. It'll have to be Thursday. Tell her that on Thursday she'll be married to this noble Earl. Will you be ready? Do you think it's okay for us to rush this? We won't have a big celebration, just a few friends. Romeo. It was the lark, the bird that sings in the morning, not the nightingale. Look, love what are those streaks of light in the clouds over there in the east. Night is finished and day is coming. If I want to live, I have to leave. If I stay I'll die.

Juliet. That light is not daylight. I'm sure of it. It's some meteor from the sun to light your way to Mantua. Please stay. You don't need to go yet.

Romeo. Let me be captured and put to death. I'm happy to do it if that's what you want. I'll say that the light over there is not the break of day. It's just the reflection of the moon. I'll say that the bird I heard is not the lark. I want to stay much more than I want to go. Come, death and welcome! Juliet wants it to be that way. So, let's talk my love. It's not daylight.

Juliet. It is. It is! Get out of here. It's the lark that sings so out of tune, making such a racket. You know, some people say the lark signifies the sweet division between day and night. Lady Capulet. (Offstage) Daughter, Are you awake?

Juliet. Who's that? Is that my mother? Is she still up so late, or did she wake up early? What strange reason could she have for coming here?

Lady Capulet. You'll feel the loss, but the person you lost won't feel anything.

Juliet. With the loss I feel right now, I can't help but cry for him forever.

Lady Capulet. Well, girl, I'm sure you're crying not so much for the fact that he's dead, but because the villain who killed him is still alive.

Juliet. What villain, madam?

Lady Capulet. That villain, Romeo.

Juliet. (Aside) He's a long way from being a villain. (To Lady Capulet) God pardon him. I do, with all my heart. And yet, no man can make my heart grieve like he does.

Lady Capulet. That's because that murderer is still alive.

Juliet. Yes, madam. I can't reach him with my hands, and I wish that no one but me could avenge my cousin's death.

Lady Capulet. We'll have revenge for it, don't you worry. Stop crying. I'll send someone to Mantua where Romeo lives. This person will poison him so soon he'll be joining Tybalt. I hope this will satisfy you.

Juliet. I will never be satisfied with Romeo until I see him - dead. Dead is how my heart feels for my cousin. Madam, if you could find a man to give him the poison, I'll mix it so that Romeo will sleep quietly soon after he's taken it. Oh, how my heart hates to hear that name when I can't go after him. I want to use the love I had for my cousin, to take my anger out on the body of the man who killed him.

Lady Capulet. Find out the way and I'll find the right man. But now I have good news for you, girl.

Juliet. And joy comes at such a right time. What's the news? Please tell me.

Lady Capulet. Well, you have a very good father, child. He's arranged for you to be taken out of your sadness. He's sorted something out for you that you didn't even expect or even ask for.

Juliet. Madam, tell me quickly. What is it?

Lady Capulet. Okay, my child. Early next Thursday morning, the brave, young, noble gentleman, Count Paris, at Saint Peter's Church, will make you a joyful bride.

Juliet. Now, I swear by Saint Peter's Church and by Saint Peter too. He will not make me a joyful bride. I wonder why he's in such a hurry that I must marry him before he's had a chance to court me. Please tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet. And if I did, I swear I'd rather marry Romeo, whom you know I hate, than Paris. Now, that's really news!

If you don't stop crying, tears and sighs will sink your ship. So wife, how're things? Have you told her about the plans yet?

Lady Capulet. Yes, sir, but she's having none of it. She says thanks, but no thanks. I wish the fool were dead and married to her grave.

Capulet. Calm down. Let me understand this, wife. How come she refuses? Isn't she thankful? Isn't she proud of this? Doesn't she count her blessings? Doesn't she realise she's unworthy of this man who wants to marry her?

Juliet. I'm not proud of what you've done, but I'm thankful. I cannot be proud of something I hate, but I can be thankful for it because it was meant in love.

Capulet. How is this so? This doesn't make sense. What is this? You're saying, 'proud' and 'I thank you' and 'I no thank you' and 'not proud.' You rotten little girl. I have no time for no thank yous or pride or no pride. Get yourself ready for Thursday to go with Paris to Saint Peter's Church, or I will drag you there myself. Out, you awful girl. You pale face!

Lady Capulet. Shame on you! Are you mad?

Juliet. Good father, I'm begging you on my knees. Please just let me say one thing.

Capulet. Forget it, you disobedient girl! I tell you what to do. Get to church on Thursday, or never look at me in the face again. Don't say a word. Don't answer me back. My fingers itch to slap you. Wife, we thought ourselves blessed that God lent us this one child, but now I see this one is too much and she's actually a curse. She repulses me.

Now I've found someone of noble parentage, good looking, youthful, and well educated. He's got everything one would want in a man. And then to have this wretched fool, like a whining puppet, look at this good fortune and say, I won't get married. I cannot love, I'm too young, Please excuse me. Well, if you won't get married, I'll excuse you. Eat and stay where you like, but you will not live in this house with me. Think about it, I'm not joking here. Thursday is near. Nurse. Romeo has been banished so he can't dare to come back here to make you keep your vows. Even if he does come back, he has to do so undercover. Since things are the way they are, I think you should marry the count. He's a lovely gentleman. Romeo is a dishcloth when compared to him. The count's eyes are greener and quicker and better than an eagle's. I hate to say it, but I think you would be happier in this second marriage because it's much better than your first. Even if it isn't better, your first one is just as good as dead. Even if Romeo is as good as Paris, at least he doesn't live here now, so he's of no use to you.

Juliet. Are you serious?

Nurse. Of course I am.

Juliet. Amen!

Nurse. What?

Juliet. Well, you've given me great comfort. Go in and tell my mother I've gone to Friar Lawrence's cell to make a confession and be absolved from my sins for displeasing my father.

I don't know which is worse; her wanting me to break my vows, or saying bad things about my husband after she praised him so many thousands of times before. Away with her. From now on, I'm not telling her anything I think in my heart. I'm going to the friar to know what to do about this. If all else fails, at least I have the power to take my own life.

Prologue

Romeo's former loving feelings are dying and a new one is ready to take its place. First he loved Rosaline so much that he was willing to die for her. Now that he's met the lovely Juliet, he's forgotten all about his first love. Now the object of Romeo's affections loves him back. They both fell for each other's good looks. However, the person who is supposed to be his worse enemy is the very person to whom he has to profess his love. On the other hand, the person Juliet should fear, is the same person who's stolen her heart.
Because he's an enemy, Romeo has no opportunity to say the sweet things lovers usually say to each other.
While Juliet loves him just as much, she has even less opportunity to spend time with Romeo anywhere.
The love they feel for each other gives them power and in time they will get the chance to meet. Extreme dangers can turn into extreme sweetness.

Enter, Romeo on his own

Romeo. How can I go away when my heart remains here. I have to go back to the centre of all this.

Romeo leaves the stage front. Enter, Benvolio and Mercutio. They can't see him.

Benvolio. Romeo! Cousin, Romeo!

Mercutio. I bet he's gone home to bed.

Benvolio. No. I know he ran this way and jumped over this orchard wall. Call for him, Mercutio.

Mercutio. No. Why don't I just conjure him up. (Calling out) Romeo! Madman! Crazy lover! Show yourself in the form of a sigh. Speak one rhyme and I'll know it's you. Say, 'Ah me!' Young Abraham Cupid made one just shot at King Cophetua when he fell in love with the beggar maid.
(Talking to Benvolio) Romeo doesn't hear me. He doesn't stir, he doesn't move. The poor sod is dead. I must conjure him by Rosaline's bright eyes, her high forehead, red lips, lovely legs, her trembling thighs and the things that are in the area of her thighs. In the name of all these things, appear to us, Romeo.

Benvolio. He'll be angry if he hears you saying all that.

Mercutio. No, that's not true. What would make him angry is if I summoned some strange spirit to sleep with her. That would be wrong. What I'm doing is really harmless. I'm saying the name of the woman he loves so that he'll come out to see us.

Benvolio. I know. he's hidden among these trees. His love his blind, so he's keeping the right company by staying in the dark.

Mercutio. If love was blind it would never hit the target. Will Romeo sit under a tree that looks like a bottom and wish his girl was that type of fruit? Romeo, I so wish that was so. Good night, Romeo. I'm off to my bed. This field is too cold for me to sleep in. Come on, Benvolio, let's go.

Romeo returns. It's dark and he's under Juliet's window.

Romeo. It's easy to make fun of something you've never gone through yourself.

Juliet appears in a window above. She doesn't know he's there.

Wait! What's that light in the window up there? It's in the east and Juliet is the rising sun. Rise up, lovely sun, and get rid of the jealous moon (Diana is the goddess of the moon and virginity). It's already sick and pale with grief because you, her servant is more beautiful than she is.
Don't be her servant because she is jealous of you. Serving her makes you look sick and green. Only fools clothe themselves with her. Get rid of it! There's my lady! I love her so. It looks like two of the best stars in heaven had to go away on business. They asked her eyes to twinkle in their places until they came back.

If the stars were in her head and her eyes were in their places in the sky, the brightness of her cheeks would outshine them, just like the sun outshines a lamp. If her eyes were in the sky, it would light it up so brightly that even at night, the birds would sing, thinking it was still daylight. Look how she leans her cheek on her hand. Oh, I wish I were that glove on that hand so I could touch that cheek.

Juliet. Oh, dear!

Romeo. (Aside) She speaks!
Oh speak again, bright angel. You're as glorious as an angel. You make mortal men look up to gaze at you in wonder.

Juliet. (She doesn't know he can hear her) Oh Romeo, Romeo! Why do you have to be who you are, Romeo? Deny your father and change your name. Either that, or just swear you love me and I'll stop being a Capulet.

Romeo. (Aside) Should I just keep listening, or should I speak now?

Juliet. (She still doesn't know Romeo can hear her). It's only by name that we're enemies. Even if you were not a Montague, you would still be the person you are. What's 'Montague'? Juliet. Who are you? Why do you hide in the dark and listen to my private thoughts.

Romeo. I don't know how to tell you who I am. I hate my name, my love, because it's an enemy to you. If I'd written my name down, I would've torn the paper up.

Juliet. I've only heard you say a few words, but already I recognise your voice. Aren't you Romeo? A Montague?

Romeo. I'm neither of them if you dislike them, my love.

Juliet. How did you get here? Why did you come? The orchard walls are high and hard to climb. Being in this place could mean death to you if any of my relatives find you.

Romeo. I flew over the walls on the wings of love. Stone structures cannot hold love out. If there is a possibility to do something, a man in love will do it. That's why your relatives don't scare me.

Juliet. If they see you, they'll kill you.

Romeo. Well, an angry look from you is worse than twenty of your relatives with swords. All you need to do is look at me with love and I'm a match for anything they can dish out.

Juliet. I really don't want them to see you here.

Romeo. It's dark. They won't see me. If it turns out you don't love me, I don't care if they find me anyway. I'd rather they killed me than have to live without your love.

Juliet. Who told you how to get here?

Romeo. Love made me want to look for you, and it's love that led me here to where you are. I'm not a sailor, but if you were as far away as on the other side of a vast sea, I would still find you.

Juliet. I know you can't see my face because it's dark outside, otherwise you would see me blushing about the things you're saying. I know I should try to keep up my good manners and deny all the things you heard me say, but forget about manners! Do you love me? I know you'll say yes, and I'll take your word for it. But you may still prove to be lying. I know they say Jupiter laughs when people in love lie to each other. Oh, Romeo, if you do love me, say it and tell the truth. Otherwise, if you think I'm too easy to win, I'll play hard-to-get so you can work to win me over.

The truth is though, handsome Montague, I'm too much in love with you to do anything like that. Because of this, I know you may think I'm too easy. But trust me, I'll be more true to you than other girls who act coy and off-hand. I should've been more coy, I know that. But you already heard me saying all those things about my true feelings when I didn't know you were there. I don't want you to think that just because you made me love you so easily, that my love isn't serious.

Romeo. Lady, I swear by the sacred moon above our heads.

Juliet. Don't swear by the moon. It's too inconsistent. It changes monthly. I don't want our love to be like that.

Romeo. What should I swear by?

Juliet. Don't swear at all. Or if you must, swear by your lovely self because you're like a god I worship. I'll believe you then.

Romeo. If my heart's dear love...

Juliet. Well, don't swear. Although I feel happy about you, I can't feel any happiness tonight in this exchange of promises. It's all too rash, ill-advised and too sudden. It's like lightening which comes then swiftly disappears before you can say, 'it's lightening!' Good night my sweet. Romeo. Would you take it back? Why would you do that, love?

Juliet. Only to give it to you again. I wish for the one thing I already have. I want to give you everything as bountifully as the sea. My love is as deep as the ocean. The more I give to you, the move I have. It's infinite.

Nurse calls from inside

I hear something inside. Bye, love. I'm coming, nurse. Sweet Montague, stay here, I'll be back in a minute.

Juliet leaves the balcony

Romeo. Oh, blessed, blessed night. I'm afraid all this is just a dream because it's so dark. It's much too good to be true.

Juliet returns to the balcony again

Juliet. Just a minute, dear Romeo. And then I have to say 'good night' for good. If you have honourable feelings for me, send me a message tomorrow. I'll send a messenger to you and you can tell him where and when we could be married. I'll lay all my fortunes at your feet and follow you throughout the world.

Nurse. (From inside) Madam!

Juliet. (To the nurse) Just a minute! (To Romeo) ...but if you don't have honourable intentions, I beg you...

Nurse. (From inside) Madam!

Juliet. I'm coming. (To Romeo) ...to stop trying to get to me and leave me to grieve. I'll send him tomorrow.

Romeo. You bet.

Juliet. A thousand times good night.

Juliet leaves the balcony above

Romeo. Leaving you is a thousand times worse than being with you. Love attracts a lover as strongly as a boy wants to leave his school books. When lovers part it's as sad as a school boy who has to study.

Romeo is about to leave when Juliet reappears on her balcony

Juliet. Hey, Romeo. I wish I could make a call like a falconer so that I could call my falcon back to me again. I'm stuck in the house, so I have to be very quiet. Or else I would rip open the cave where the woman, Echo lies and I would make her repeat your name until her voice is hoarser than mine, saying, 'My Romeo!'

Romeo. My soul is calling my name. The sounds of lovers calling each others' names is silver-sweet. It's like soft music to all who hears them.

Juliet. Romeo.

Romeo. My little chick.

Juliet. What time should I send the messenger to you?

Romeo. By nine.

Juliet. Okay. It seems like twenty years from now till then. I can't remember why I called you back.

Romeo. I'll stand here until you remember.

Juliet. I've forgotten it. You may have to stand there forever. The only thing I can remember is how I love your company.

Romeo. Keep forgetting, and I'll keep standing here. I'll forget I have a home and stay right here.

Juliet. It's almost morning. I want you to go, but I'll probably only be able to let you go as far as a little child lets his pet bird go. He allows it to jump from his hand for a little while, before he pulls it back again on a string because
he gets jealous when the bird is free.

Romeo. I wish I was your bird.
Juliet. So do I, love. But I would pet you so much, you would die. Good night, good night. Being apart is such sweet sorrow, so I'll say good night until it's tomorrow.

Juliet exits

Romeo. Sleep peacefully. I wish I were sleep and peace so that I could be there with you. Now, I'll go and see my priest so I can ask him for advice and tell him about my good luck.

Enter Friar Lawrence carrying a basket

Frair Lawrence. The new morning's taking over from the dark night, casting its light on the eastern clouds. I need to fill up this basket with weeds and medicinal flowers before the sun dries up the dew on the ground. The earth is nature's mother and also her tomb. The same plants which are buried, are the very same ones she's given birth to.

Many different children come out of the Earth's excellent womb. We're all so different, yet she provides all with the right kind of nourishment we need individually. Herbs, plants and stones all possess a special quality. Even the vile things on Earth provide her with some sort of goodness. On the other hand, even good things can turn bad if they're used for the wrong purpose or by the wrong people.

Enter Romeo

Inside the middle of this little flower lies both potent poison and medicine. If you smell it, it cheers you up completely. If you taste it, however, it could kill you. Yet, these two opposite things can reside in one flower. This is also the same for mankind. Good and evil can reside in the same place. Where evil is prominent, death takes over the entire plant.

Romeo. Good morning, Father.

Frair Lawrence. Bless you. Why are you greeting me so sprightly so early in the morning? Young man, it spells trouble if you're leaving your nice bed so early in the morning. Old men have things to worry about so they don't sleep very well. Young men shouldn't have that problem. That's why I know that something's wrong. You've got things on your mind. Either that, or you haven't even been to bed yet.

Romeo. The last one is true. I had a sweeter rest than sleep could ever give me.

Friar Lawrence. God forgive you! Were you with Rosaline?

Romeo. With Rosaline, Father? No. I've forgotten her and all the sadness she made me feel.

Friar Lawrence. That's better, my son. But where have you been?

Romeo. I'll tell you this once so I don't have to tell you again. I've been off to a feast with my enemy. Suddenly, someone wounded me and I wounded her. You have the power to cure us though. I bear no hatred, Father, this request will actually benefit my enemy.

Friar Lawrence. Don't talk in riddles. Say what you mean. If I misunderstand your confession, I may give you an incorrect absolution.

Romeo. I love rich Capulet's daughter. We're both set on each other in every way except for marriage, which is what you have to do for us. I'll fill you in the details later on about how we met, wooed and fell in love. We've already exchanged vows, and I'll tell you more later on, but I beg of you to agree to marry us today.

Friar Lawrence. Holy Saint Francis, this is a drastic turnaround. Is Rosaline, who you loved so dearly, so quickly forgotten? Young men love with their eyes not with their hearts. Jesus and Mary! Do you remember how much you cried for Rosaline? What a lot of wasted salty tears. You well and truly seasoned the love you never actually tasted. The sun has not yet melted all your sighs you sighed for her. Your groans of love are still ringing in my old ears. There must be stains of the tears you shed for Rosaline, still on your cheeks, not completely dried yet. You can't expect women to be faithful if men are so fickle and unreliable.

Romeo. You used to tell me off for loving Rosaline.

Friar Lawrence. Ah, but I told you off for obsessing about her, not for loving her.

Romeo. But you told me to forget my love for her.

Friar Lawrence. Well, I didn't tell you to get rid of one just to pick up another one, did I?

Romeo. Please, let's not do this now. The girl I love now loves me back. The other one didn't care for me.

Friar Lawrence. She obviously knew that you had no idea what love is. Anyway, come on. I'll help you with your secret wedding. But this is only because I think this union may serve to bring your households together.

Romeo. Let's do it. I'm in a hurry.

Friar Lawrence. Go wisely and slowly. Those who rush into things stumble.

Enter Benvolio and Mercutio

Mercutio. Where the devil is Romeo. Didn't he come home last night?

Benvolio. No. Not to his father's house. I asked a servant this morning.

Mercutio. That hard-hearted Rosaline is going to torment him until he goes mad.

Benvolio. Tybalt, old Capulet's nephew, sent a letter to Romeo's father's house.

Mercutio. Really? I bet he wants to challenge them.

Benvolio. Romeo will answer it.

Mercutio. Any man who can write a letter, knows how to answer one.

Benvolio. What I mean is Romeo will respond to the challenge and rise to it.

Mercutio. Dear me! Poor Romeo. He's already dead. Stabbed by a fair girl's black eye. He's been cut through the ear with a love song. The centre of his heart was split by Cupid's arrow. And now he has to face Tybalt.

Benvolio. Why? What's it about Tybalt?

Mercutio. He's tough. He's brave and does everything with precision. He fights just like you sing at a recital. He's got timing, distance and good pitch. He knows just which spot to hit. He's like a butcher. He goes right for the heart and nothing else. I mean, he went to the best duelling school. He's got all the moves.

Benvolio. Has he.

Mercutio. I mean, I really don't like those fancy guys who use foreign words and accents for stuff. I hate their affected ways, posh talk and proper mannerisms. They can't feel free to enjoy normal things.

Enter Romeo

Benvolio. Here he comes.

Mercutio. Gosh, he looks dried up. Looks like he's lost some weight too. He's all lovey dovey. (To Romeo) You left us in the lurch and ran out on us last night.

Romeo. Good morning to you both. What do you mean I left you in a lurch?

Mercutio. Don't you see what I'm saying? You gave us the slip, man.

Romeo. Sorry about that. I had very important business to take care of.

Couldn't hang around to worry about good manners and all that.

Mercutio. Yeah. Don't think I don't know what your 'important business' was all about. I'm sure it was the kind that makes you weak in the knees.

Romeo. Like 'bending my knees.'

Mercutio. You're exactly right, man!

Romeo. I'll leave it at that. That's the most polite explanation.

Mercutio. Yeah. I am the master of manners and courtesy, you know.

Romeo. And the mistress.

Mercutio. Whatever.

Romeo. Sure.

Mercutio. This joke is getting stale now. That's all you do, make fun of everything.

Romeo. It's all silliness, really.

Mercutio. What do you say, Benvolio?

Romeo. I could keep this up for ages. I don't run out of wit, you know. Shall I just declare myself the winner?

Mervutio. Well, if your jokes will all veer out on a tangent, I'm done. You have more off-tangent ideas in one joke than I have in five. I can't do them like you do.

Romeo. At least make and effort to keep up, man.

Mercutio. Well, I can bite you in the ear for a laugh.

Romeo. Don't you even try.

Mercutio. Your wit is a very sharp tasting sauce.

Romeo. Well then it's the right sauce to eat with a goose.

Mercutio. And that's meant to be funny?

Romeo. Come on.

Mercutio. You know, I think all this joking around is a lot better than pining over love. Now, you're as jovial as your old self. Love had made you into a drivelling idiot looking for some place to stick your head.

Benvolio. Stop right there.

Mercutio. Hey, I'm not done.

Benvolio. I've got to stop you, otherwise you'd be going on and on and on.

Mercutio. That's where you're wrong, my man. I always finish it up short and sweet.

Enter nurse and her servant Peter. They can't hear the three young men talking about them. They seem to think that the nurse is a prostitute.

Romeo. Here's a sight for sore eyes.

Benvolio. Gosh! She's as big as a ship.

Mercutio. There are two of them, a man and a woman.

Nurse. Peter!

Peter. Yes.

Nurse. Give me my fan.

Mercutio. Go on, Peter. Give her the fan so she can hide her face with it. Her fan is prettier than she is.

Nurse. Good morning, gentlemen. (The nurse and Peter meet the young men).

Mercutio. Good afternoon, lovely lady.

Nurse. It's afternoon already?

Mercutio. Well, my clock is caressing the hand of noon time.

Nurse. How rude you are!

Mercutio. I'm a man. That's my job, lady.

Nurse. You're right there. Don't I know that very well. Anyway, can any of you tell me where I can find Romeo?

Romeo. I can tell you. But young Romeo will be older when you find him, than he was when you first started looking for him. I'm the youngest man by that name. There is no one younger or worse.

Nurse. You speak well.

Mercutio. Very well and wise (mocking).

Nurse. (To Romeo) If you're Romeo I have to speak with you in conference. (The nurse said the wrong word when she meant, 'confidence.' She's not very good with big words).

Benvolio. She'll indite (he's making fun of her incorrect use of the word above. He means, 'invite') him to a dinner party.

Mercutio. I think I know what it is.

Romeo. What do you mean.

Mercutio. She's not a prostitute, unless she's using her ugliness to hide that fact. (He sings) Meat from an old rabbit is good to eat if you can't get anything else. But if it's so old that it goes bad before you've had a chance to eat it, then you've wasted your money on it.

(Speaks) Romeo, are you coming to your father's house for lunch?

Rmeo. Yes, I'll follow you in a minute.

Mercutio. Bye old lady. Bye, old lady, lady.

Exit Mercutio and Benvolio

Nurse. Who on earth does he think he is. Does he have to be so rude and foul-mouthed.

Romeo. He's just loves to hear the sound of his own voice. He talks a lot but says nothing.

Nurse. If he says anything bad about me, I always get my revenge. Even if he was bigger and louder than he is, I still get my own back. If I can't do it myself, I'd find someone else who can. What a jerk. I'm not one of his stupid little lady friends. (To Peter) And you stood there and let him talk to me like that.

Peter. I didn't see anyone make fun of you. If that was the case, I'd have drawn my weapon as quick as a flash. Trust me, I'll draw my weapon as quick as anyone else if I think a fight is starting and the law is on my side.

Nurse. I swear to you, I'm so angry, I'm shaking all over. How dare he, the jerk!

(To Romeo) Can I have a word with you please? As I told you, my young lady wants me to ask you a question. What she wanted me to say, I'll keep to myself. But first let me tell you, if you're making a fool of her, it would be crime because she is so young. If you're trying to trick her, it would be seriously wrong to do to any woman and very bad of you.

Romeo. Nurse, give my regards to your lady and mistress. I swear to you...

Nurse. You seem to have a good heart, and I'll tell her so. Believe you me, she will be a happy woman.

Romeo. What will you tell her? You haven't listened to anything I've said.

Nurse. I will tell her, sir that you protest to her. (She means propose). That's a gentlemanly thing to do.

Romeo. Listen. Tell her to make up some reason to get out of her house this afternoon and come to the Friar Lawrence's chapel where we can make our vows and be married. (Gives her money) Here is a reward for your efforts.

Nurse. No. I won't take a penny.

Romeo. I insist.

Nurse. (Takes the money) She'll be there.

Romeo. Wait, good nurse. Within the hour, my servant will be behind the abbey wall. He'll give you a rope ladder. I'll use this to climb over the wall at night to meet Juliet in secret when it's dark. Goodbye. Be trustworthy and I'll reward you for it. Commend me to your mistress.

Nurse. God bless you. Listen to me, sir.

Romeo. What do you want to say to me?

Nurse. Can your servant keep the secret? Have you never heard the saying, 'Two can conspire together to put one away'?

Romeo. He's trustworthy.

Nurse. Well, sir, my mistress is the sweetest lady. You know, when she was a little child, there was a nobleman in the town, his name is Paris, who wanted to claim her for himself. But Juliet would rather see a toad than see him. I tease her sometimes by telling her Paris is better for her than you are. But I swear, when I say that she turns as white as the whitest sheet in the world. Rosemary, the token for lovers, and Romeo begin with the same letter.

Romeo. Yes, nurse. How about that. They both begin with R.

Nurse. Oh, you're funny. That's a dog's name. R is for the... No, I know it begins with some other letter. She says the most pretty things about you and rosemary. You should hear them.

Romeo. Give my regards to your lady.

Nurse. Yes a thousand times. Peter!

Peter. I'm here.

Nurse. Go ahead of me.

Enter Juliet

Juliet. I sent the nurse to find Romeo since nine o'clock. She promised to return in half an hour but she's not back yet. I wonder if she couldn't find him. Oh, that can't be so. She's so slow. The messengers of love should be thoughts that fly ten times faster than sun beams. They should be able to push back the shadows that hang over dark hills, just like quick doves carry love. They have Cupid's wings so they can fly as fast as the wind. Now the sun is on the highest hill. That means it's now noon. Still, she hasn't come back yet. If she was young and sprightly she would've been as swift as a ball. My words would bounce her to him, then his sweet words would bounce her right back to me. But so many old people act like they were already dead. Sluggish, slow, fat and colourless like lead.

Enter nurse and Peter

Oh Good! There she comes. Oh darling, nurse. What did he say? Did you see him? Send Peter away.

Nurse. Peter, wait for me at the gate.

Exit Peter

Juliet. Now, darling nurse, Dear me! Why do you look so sad? Even if it's bad news, just tell it to me quickly. If you have good news, this is an awful trick of yours, having such a sour face.

Nurse. I'm tired. Let me rest up a bit. Oh, how my bones hurt! I've been all over the place today.

Juliet. I wish you had my bones and I had your news. Please, come on, tell me.

Nurse. Dear me! You're in such a hurry. Can't you wait a bit? Can't you see I'm out of breath?

Juliet. How can you be out of breath if you have enough breath to tell me you're out of breath? The excuse you have to delay the news is longer than the actual news itself. Is the news good or bad? Answer that. Say that and I'll wait for the details later. Tell me so I could just know and be done with it. Is it good or bad?

Nurse. Well, you've made a stupid choice. You don't know how to pick a man. Romeo's face is handsome than any other man's. His legs are great. His hands, feet and body aren't much to talk about, but they're still finer than most. He's not the most polite man I've met, but I'll give him this, he's as gentle as a lamb. Off you go now. Be good. Have you eaten yet?

Juliet. No not yet. I know everything you've just said to me. What did he say about our marriage. What about that?

Nurse. Lord! How my head aches. What a terrible headache I've got. It's pounding as if it will crack up in 20 different places. My back is playing up too. Ah, my back, my back! (Juliet rubs her back) Not there.The other side! It's all your fault for sending me running all over the place. I could catch my death.

Juliet. Believe me I'm so sorry you're not well. Please, sweet, sweet nurse, tell me what my love said.

Nurse. Your love says, like an honourable gentleman, and a courteous, and a kind, and a handsome, and I swear, a virtuous...where is your mother?

Juliet. Where is my mother? Why, she's inside. Where else would she be? How odd your answer is. 'Your love says, like a honest gentleman, where is your mother?'

Nurse. Oh holy Mary! Are you this impatient? Come on, you're being silly. Is this what I get for my aching bones. From now on, take care of your messages yourself.

Juliet. You're blowing this out of proportion. Come on, What did Romeo say?

Nurse. Do you have permission to go out to church today?

Juliet. Yes.

Nurse. Then hurry up and go over to Friar Lawrence's cell. There's a husband there, waiting to make you a wife. Here comes the blood rushing to your cheeks. You blush bright red at any news. Rush to the church. I'll go a different way to get a rope ladder. Your love will use it to climb up to your window when it gets dark. I'll do all the dull, dreary work for your pleasure. But soon you'll be doing the work at night. You go to the cell and I'll go to dinner.

Juliet. Great! Wish me good luck. Bye, sweet nurse!

Enter Friar Lawrence and Romeo

Friar Lawrence. May the heavens bless this holy act of marriage so that nothing happens in the future to make us regret it.

Romeo. Amen! Amen! But whatever sorrows come our way, it can't be greater than the joy I feel when I look at her. Join us with your holy words, then even love-destroying death can take its best shot at us. Just to be able to call her mine is enough for me.

Frair Lawrence. These sudden bursts of joy have sudden endings too. They burn themselves up just like gunpowder consumes itself. Even the sweetest honey makes you sick if you eat too much of it too quickly. Once you've devoured it, you don't want any more any time soon. So, love each other wisely and in moderation. Let long-lasting love prevail. Too fast is the same as too slow.

Juliet enters in a great rush and embraces Romeo

Romeo. Here she comes. A footstep as light as hers will not be able to endure the difficult and rocky road of life. Lovers feel so light. They feel as though they can walk on a spider's web, just like a summer breeze and not fall. That's how fleeting happiness is.

Juliet. Good evening my confessor.

Friar Lawrence. Romeo will thank you, my dear, for both of us.

Juliet. I'll thank him right back, just so we're even.

Romeo. Oh, Juliet, if you're as happy as I am, and you're better with words, tell me all about the happiness you imagine we'll have when we're married.

Juliet. Imagination is a lot better than how much you can describe in words. Anyone who can actually count the things they have is poor. My true love is so much, I can't even count half of it.

Friar Lawrence. Come. Come with me and we'll do this quickly. I'm certainly not leaving you two on your own before I marry you to each other.
